Meet Me in Moruga! - A Historical Re-discovery, Palance868 Adventures Club, Sunday, 17. January 2021

The name impresses upon the average Trinidadian with many feelings, none of which can truly match the real essence of Moruga. Said to be the place where Christopher Colombus landed in 1498, Moruga is rich and overflowing with history, culture and tradition. Situated on the southern coastal landscape of Trinidad, it is bathed in the same waters as the South American coastline. In fact, much of the cultural relics and artifacts you find in Moruga’s two museums are reminiscent of that old Amerindian and Spanish intertwining of cultures those centuries ago. Yes, Moruga is home to not one, but two museums, one that speaks to the sociocultural history of the district, and the other speaks to the rich aromatic epicurean experience that is well known to the locals. If you stretch your imagination a bit, even the Moruga Spring Bridge, one of the oldest in the country, is like a museum of architectural might in the days of old iron and steel. Finally, human repositories of knowledge exist, in the First People’s Community of Moruga – complete with their own Chief.

This quaint little village is home to a plethora of geologically interesting sites. From mud volcanoes, to a mini-“Pitch Lake”, dramatic eroded sandstone beachside cliffs, the Trinity Hills, stacks and beautiful sand spits, the area packs quite a punch per capita for those so inclined. Fishing ports, seaside monuments to old Spanish explorers, warm inviting waters, well-kept beach amenities are sure to cap off your day of exploration with an evening of relaxation, kinship and renewed love for our sapphire dipped twin island gems.
